NARROW STREETS:
Lead to Casa Margherita

Winding your way up from the peaceful village, past the watchful cat and back to the house, this view as you walk home never fails to capture me.

PICTURE WINDOW:

Torre di Palme is a delightful village perched on a hill above the Adriatic. The original plan and atmosphere are carefully maintained (inhabitants can only hang out their washing at night!) The narrow streets and alleys, ancient churches and stone cottages will enchant you. A shop in the village sells all kinds of wrought iron work by local craftsmen. Both Il Galeone restaurant and the pizzeria at the entrance to the village are worth a try.

There are plenty of places you can go for a meal. They use only the best local produce round here – salami, hams, cheeses, pork, chicken, ducks, vegetables and fruit which vary from season to season.
In the country there is Rio Ete, Picchio Verde, Levandara and near Porto San Giorgio La Tradizione. Wherever you go you’ll find a Pizzeria – and they all serve other dishes as well as an incredible number of pizzas. A good restaurant for a special meal is I Piceni at Ortezzano. For fish (a bit more expensive) go to one of the seaside towns. At Porto San Giorgio you’ll find beach chalets such as Lo Storione, La Pinetina, La Conchiglia, Il Delfino Verde, Il Quadrifoglio and in town Campanelli and Excelsior.
A DOORWAY TO TRANQUILLITY

The Backdoor shows how close the countryside is.

Those who seek relaxation can spend time walking through the countryside. A net work of walks in the territory of Ponzano, Monte Giberto, Grottazzolina and Petritoli is well signposted throughout the area. You will discover fascinating villages, country chapels, people at work, local flora and fauna. Don’t forget your camera!

Each village has a baker’s with a variety of breads and cakes. The grocer’s shop (alimentari) will provide you with salame, ham (prosciutto), cheese (formaggio) – try the local sheep’s cheese (pecorino); drinks including red or white wine (vino rosso o bianco), olive (olive) and many other delicacies. Be adventurous.

Holidays in paradise

Only 2 km from Torchiaro a farm in the country keeps horses which can be hired for an hour or so. The unmade roads around the farm are fine for a leisurely ride. You can go as far as the hilltop village of Monterubbiano with its shady gardens.

San Marco is a church standing on a hill 2 km west of Ponzano. Its rounded doorway and low façade reveal romanesque origins. Built in local brick, the inside is stunning in its simplicity. The mighty tower is a later addition and gives it a certain majesty against the skyline. The church is open for Mass on Sundays and weddings on Saturday (usually late morning or afternoon). The farmer living opposite will also come up with a key!

If peace and quiet is all that you want just chill out on the balcony in the sun or in the cool of the basement sitting area and take your pick of the selection of books on trhe book shelves or listen to a CD. If you enjoyed the complementary wine further supplies can be purchased from Azienda Agricola Castello Fageto at Pedaso - full details of their location will be found in the more comprehensive local information available when you arrive.
